Despite the lack of a mile long runway, Alice + Olivia's collections always seem to leave a lasting impression. To me, their preppy wearability, unexpected layering and supple fabrics trigger this question.
'How would I wear those clothes?'
The emphasis, on the 'I' - because that is the point of fashion week for us mortals. How to translate catwalk to sidewalk, so that we can actually wear the clothes! Looking at the F/W 2013/14 ensembles, a gothic baroque vibe heavily influenced the collection. Designer Stacey Bendet's motto 'we never use the same fabric twice' was upheld to perfection as seen in the concoction of moody metallic florals and rich textures of wool, leather and feathers. The colour palette - jewel tones, gunmetal, blood red - seemed to fit the misty forest set up where the collection was more of a story than a flat fashion show.
Personally, Alice + Olivia is a pick and choose label. I don't mean it is either a hit or miss but rather every single separate can be effortlessly paired with your existing wardrobe. Dripping with unique details, Bendet's garments are both easy and interesting to style resulting in a personalised outfit. As for the gowns, well then, you'll just be the belle of the ball.
